The front page of a very rare and valued copy of the Great Speckled Bird. This was an underground news paper published by the Atlanta Cooperative News Project that dealt with the times. The hippies loved it. That’s Duane Allman on the cover. They had just played a free concert in Atlanta at Piedmont Park and they were starting to gain a following in the south, but they were still off most peoples radar at that time. This issue is dated April 19, 1969.
Sweet Rooster….from left to right are me with a 1969 Les Paul Custom, Ken Lyons (original 38 Special bassist with a Gibson EB-3), Bill Pelky (drummer and neiborhood friend), Donnie Van-Zant, and Kevin Elson (keyboards and rhythm guitar). Kevin was a survivor of the Skynyrd plane crash and went on to produce Journey, Mr. Big, and Europe to name a few as well as doing live audio for Michael Jackson and Madonna.
Sweet Rooster and our infamous International Milk Truck complete with flower power and marquee. Kevin’s moustache is fake.
Sweet Rooster truck just after the wreck. Donnie and I were on our way to band practice when a Mr. Girardi ran a stop sign in the rain and hit the back corner of our van, spinning us around and finally tipping over on its side. The broken glass on the passenger side window is an imprint of my ass. Lucky for me the door was closed because I would have probably been “smooshed” when we over-turned. Donnie was slightly injured in the accident.
February 16, 1970 Sweet Rooster plays at my high school. That’s Donnie Van-Zant singing and this was our first band together. It also included Ken Lyons who was also 38 Special’s original bass player. Checkout the article and miss prints like Joe Beck instead of Jeff Beck. Also note that Ricky Powell, who it mentions came up to sing, is Billy Powell’s (Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboardist) brother. If all of this isn’t funny enough, checkout yours truly. I had just gone to see Jimi Hendrix in concert and that is exactly what he wore. I have no idea where I got that stuff but I do remember that the scarf on my leg and the shirt were purple satin. Just to make sure I was as true to form as Mr. Hendrix, I rented another full stack Marshall as if one wasn’t enough. Loud? Oh yea!!! What an idiot.

Please know that as important as each and every email you send to me is, with my hectic schedule, it is not possible to respond to every one.  I really appreciate hearing from you and appreciate the time you take to personally write me.

I also thank you from the bottom of my heart for your continued support and hope that you will continue to find a lot of fun and enjoyable things that I can share with you and from the updates we have in store for the future.
